The Devil's Kitchen: Some opinionated bloggers like to boast about the size of their web statistics. And Devil's Kitchen has been hosting a marvellously profane and foul row between some big name Brit bloggers all about this. It's really quite entertaining in between all the jargon. To me, the stupidity of statporn and the endless human mania for measuring absolutely everything conjure up so many compelling images. Obviously, I ought to add here that I watch statporn too. The trick is not feeling one has to publish it to justify a place in any conversation. But in turn, this nice theory has a problem because when you are attempting to make a profit-generating business out of it, people will ask you difficult questions about your statporn.

There's an interesting response to the end of Peter Hain's ministerial career from Mick Fealty at the Telegraph’s Brassneck blog. He praises the work undertaken by Guido Fawkes's diary, which is run by Paul Delaire Staines.

More cheerfully, The Independent newspaper has relaunched, at long last, its website, In doing so, it has finally recognised the genius of its regular editorial cartoonist, Dave Brown. He has a proper cartoon gallery full of marvellous stuff, right at the top of opinion. The joke for December the 24th is a particular treat.

You get to meet interesting people who can encourage you to think about things in a way you might not have before, or, remind you of something important that you had forgotten. Mick Fealty who spoke at a Daily Telegraph blogging event last evening, reminded me of the reasons to became a journalist, way back before the idea of blogging had crossed the consciousness of the media business. I'm listing an appropriate quote, paraphrasing Mick's verbals, from one of his online homes.

What would be your main blogging advice to a novice blogger? Listen as much as you write.

I should also name check Lloyd Shepherd and Jonathan Charles, who spotted that the BBC Radio 4 show - From our own correspondent - was, and is, a proto-blog. So, here's to the renewal of informed reportage. Long may it thrive. Thanks to Shane Richmond and all at The Telegraph for arranging the evening. Shane has also got a list of reactions to the evenings musings which I am not going to try and duplicate. Well, the comment spam has started to arrive (I'm one to talk :-) so I'm afraid I have had to turn moderation on. Sorry.

The cartoonists from Tribune (not quite the men from Uncle, but nearly) launched a digital cartoon diary last week - and have started to get some reactions to it. One in particular made me laugh as political blogger Tim Worstall replied with some vigour to the PR effort ... I quote ...

Tim > My suggestion would be to start by promoting to blogs that share your view of the world.<

Trib>It would be a very boring and sterile debate if we only spoke to people we knew we
were going to agree with wouldn't it?

Tim > Well, if you could manage to get closer to agreeing with reality that would be interesting....

Also, don't miss celebrity political blogger Guido Fawkes and his unwise foray into the world of the mainstream media and Newsnight. His film was good - and asked some sensible questions, but the decision to do an interview with Paxo and Mike White from the Guardian ... ouch!
