Channel 4 News animated political cartoon - The price of oil

The rising price of crude oil is connected to a lack of global refinery capacity, changing demand and good old traditional geopolitics. Why would a group of countries want to make their major economic asset cheaper, just to us please our domestic users?

Upcoming events news

There are several events I am exhibiting at coming up in the next few weeks. First up is Politics Pays Back, which opens on Wednesday 3rd October at the Kowalsky Gallery in central London. This is organised by the Design and Artists Copyright Society and I have some original artwork and news and political animations on show. The show runs until Jan 31st 2008.

This drawing isn't on show, but it might be called the artist in preparation...can you see the fear?

And on the weekend of October 13th and 14th, I shall be taking part in the annual Big Draw. This year's London launch, is in Covent Garden market and the theme is High Life-Low Life. There's a link here to last year's excitments (thanks for reminding me Clare.) If the track record of the event is anything to go by, it should be a great, fun weekend. Please come along and watch the Battle of the Cartoonists on Sunday afternoon.

Lastly, I also have to give a talk to a room of sixth formers at a school in Cambridge about what it is I do for a living. Of all these upcoming events, this is the one that scares the pants off me the quickest...

Channel 4 News animation

This week's animated news cartoon for Channel Four News - living in the age of terror.

We've tried to do a contemplative piece about some of the things, apart from human lives, we are all busy trying to protect...

Technology news: 110407

The well-intentioned arguments for attempting to regulate the web are daft.

There's a great fear in some news businesses and they aren't willing to accept both the good and the bad about human behaviour and favoured methods of communication.

Journalism news: Reeves-iasm No5

Your weekly guide to all that's new and interesting in how to tell the news.

Ian Reeves

This one's got a lovely clip toards the end about an American cartooning colleague of mine, Kevin Kallaugher or Kal.

In traditional fashion, after hard service for the Baltimore Sun, Kevin's job became surplus to editorial requirements. He responded in the best (fingers up) fashion, by going off and doing something altogether more interesting. Watch the video Ian has put together to find out what.

Journalism news; Reeves-iasm No4.

The unmissable journalist pioneer Mr Reeves has No4 online.

Reeves

This one is showing distinct signs of boosted production values - although the slick graphic sign off lacks the traditional face-to-face bon mots of numbers 1 to 3. Please bring them back Ian!

Terrifying interactions

Following on from yesterday's posting - full marks on the trying for new methods but this, is really, really, how not to make personalisation and interactivity. It's called Brian.

Eeeek!

A nice drawing would do better...

Telling stories

When you get taught how to report as a journalist - or tell stories clearly, one of the things you learn is that you should try and tell the tale as you would when in the pub. That is, clearly, and to the point, otherwise everyone gets bored, don't they?

It's the way he tells it.

Don't miss this

Hat-tip to Ian Reeves.

Two entirely unrelated incidents

Wonder of wonders, The Sun has a magnificent scoop today with the voice recording from two US planes involved in a friendly fire incident against British troops in Iraq.

Story

Also, it has emerged that Jonathan Powell, the PM's most senior aide, is about to be interviewed again by the Met in respect of the loans for peerages allegations.

Another story

Now, who might have an interest in making sure there was a good, big, dramatic story in the public eye today? Coroners don't talk to the media, the US certainly are not happy about the leak - who does that leave?

The politics of identity

Happy new year.

And for my 2007 prediction, this will be a major political theme all year. The advance of technology into our consumer lives is going to be mirrored by the efforts (no doubt well-intentioned) of government to get into our social and political background.

An Independent Christmas

In between this year's festivities, I have been covering the editorial slot for Dave Brown at The Independent. Here's a drawing for the 27th, a generic, where are we at the turn-of-year-image.

I was drawing this at about 2pm on Boxing Day when the news broke about the refusal of Saddam Hussein's final appeal and his impending execution.

The breaking news meant drawing a quick response, which is shown below. It'll be interesting to see which, if either, makes the paper.
